I have just read that the government will be imposing a Php4.50 tax per stick (so that's a meaty Php90 per 20-stick pack). They say that the government will use the money to fund health programs.
This suggestion is based on the Obama Model in which President Obama signed a bill into law in February 2009 increasing the federal tax rate of cigarettes.
Currently, the existing taxes on cigarettes ranges from Php2.47 per pack for low-end brands to P27.16 per pack of premium cigarette brands, which makes the Philippines the country that sells cheapest cigarettes in Asia.
Although this is only a proposal, I am thinking this bill would give me enough reason to quit. I wouldn't want to spend Php100 to Php150 for a pack of cigarette in a day; and if I do, I would make sure I would impose taxes to those free loaders! Haha
