Kim Chiu, Arnel Pineda and Michael Christian Martinez are not just achievers, they are winners. They fought the cold war against asthma.
Do you know friends, family members or colleagues who have asthma? You may want to nominate them as GSK launches the Search for Winners Against Asthma 2015. The campaign aims to choose and recognize 10 young asthmatic achievers from different walks of life.
The real winners, are the real people who have experienced the challenges of dealing with such condition. During the launch Kim Chiu shared how she lives her life with asthma and nebulizer. It can be life and lifestyle threatening, especially for someone like her who has such a very hectic schedule. She said that she started working out and exercising to strengthen her lungs.
Like Kim, Michael (yes Olympic skater Michael Martinez ) also suffers from asthma - and began experiencing it as early as two months old. He recalls being in the hospital and how cold drink improved his condition - thus his mom supported his career in figure skating. They thought it is better to spend money on this hobby than in the hospital.
If you know anyone who has asthma, nominate them in the program. The program is a nationwide search for young asthmatic achievers aged 30 years and younger who are outstanding in their respective fields despite having asthma and inspire asthma sufferers that they, too, can win against asthma.
Watch the video for Michael's interview:
The rationale for the target age group is driven by the fact that asthma is one of the most important chronic disease during childhood causing substantial morbidity1. Uncontrolled asthma is associated with a reduced lung function, impaired performance in physical exercise, and impaired quality oflife5. More severe asthma leads to more frequent school absenteeism which may negatively affect an individual’s level of education and, possibly, choice of career5. People within this age group are in the process of developing the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to achievetheir goals in life and asthma should not deter them from realizing their full potential. Thus it is necessary at this early stage to raise their awareness on asthma and how they can win against it.

I believe that one needs to stay healthy and fit to be able to do more things (I sound like a beauty queen there) - and sickness and conditions should not hinder us from doing what we love. Spread the love and good news, please :)
