I grew up watching basketball on TV. It’s because my dad and brother owned the remote control and I don’t have a choice but to join them and rejoice everytime the team scores a basket. I remember that my very first basketball crush was Jojo Lastimosa.
Eventhough they say I could pass as a basketball player, I would say No to the game. It is so physical that I don’t want to break or chip even my fingernail.
Fans, especially kids are so lucky today as they have a chance to play the game like a real NBA star through the first-ever NBA 3on3 Philippines 2011 as presented by Sprite.
This was announced to us over brunch at the National Sports Grill in Greenbelt 3, Makati during the half-time showtime of NBA Finals Game 2 Viewing. I am sure you are all excited to know about the rules of the NBA 3on3, but first let me share the fun experience on watching the game.
It’s a tight game and only then did I get to experience the fun of watching it together with other basketball enthusiasts. I see majority of men in the room but I hear screams and shouts everytime the Dallas (or the Miami) scores a goal.
During breaks, there is a Q&A portion and they gave away nice NBA stuff like caps, folders and notebooks. I don’t know much about NBA or bastketball, but the men in the room were quick. Some were even giving us the answers to we could win something; but since the place is jampacked, we just settled with just taking pictures.
We were rooting for Heat since we placed our bets in Heat (yeah, actually we placed our calling cards in the Heat fishbowl) – at the end of the game, they would draw a winner from the winning team’s bowl. I was already feeling the victory until the last few minutes when Dallas tied the score to 90 and scored a three-point shot.
There was a loud roar outside the the bar and chaos inside.
I knew miracles could happen, and Miami also scored a 3-point basket – making the score tied at 93. My dreams crashed when Dallas scored another 2 points with only less than 3 minutes in the last quarter. The desperate throw of the ball by the Heat missed the ring (a desperate move which I think only Bal David can only pull off – I remember that game of Ginebra!).
Back to the NBA 3-on-3 Philippines 2011 event, it is the NBA’s first ever 3-on-3 tournament in the ASEAN region. Basketball fanatics are in for a treat as boys and girls of all skill levels from ages of 11 to 19, with an open division for men, will be able to participate and vie for top honors and bragging rights! The event will be based on the FIBA 3-on-3 format and rules, and provide participants and fans the total NBA experience complete with entertainment and interactive elements.
The registration is on (started on Friday) and will run until June 28th. This would be a first come first serve basis. The event would be held in Mall of Asia on July 1 to 3, 2011.
The most exciting part is that NBA Legend Horace Grant (four -time NB Champion and member of 1994 NBA All-Star team) would be gracing the event, with the New York Knicks City Dancers.
More than anyone else, it is the partners which are more excited about the event. “We’re very excited to partner with the NBA and to take part in this inaugural NBA 3-on-3 event”, Criselle Pascual, Spring Brand Manager, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation shares. “It is important to encourage the youth to engage in sports like basketball to keep them active and hone their passion for the game at an eartly age. Sprite is the perfect partner of the NBA because its refreshingly clear attitude embodies the yought spirit of fun and love for the game”.
“We greatly appreciate the support of our long time partner Sprite and they are an ideal presenting partner for our first ever NBA 3-on-3 tournament in the region” said Scott Levy, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, NBA Asia. “The Philippines is the perfect place to launch this event given the country’s rich culture and passion for basketball. Thanks to the support of all of our partners, we expect this to become an annual competition that gives everyone an opportunity to experience the sport and get further involved in the game of basketball”.
Solar TV, along with Studio 23, also partnered with NBA and Sprite as the official media partner. “NBA fever is at its peak right now and we are excited to be a part of the NBA 3-on-3 Philippines 2011 presented by Sprite. The Philippines is one of the biggest markets for the NBA in Asia and through this effort, we hope to extend and broaden the NBA Fan Base, and take the sport to greater heights.”

Mommies, daddies and kids should act now, and register. All participants of the NBA 3-on-3 Philippines 2011 will receive a jersey and NBA sling bag, with early registrants (those who sign up before June 10) will receive a signed photograph of NBA legend Horace Grant.
Now, who won the raffle last Friday during the Game 2 Viewing? After 2 names were called and still no winners to take on the stage, the lucky name who was drawn on the third drawing was Bill Velasco!
It was such a fun morning. Thanks to all the NBA, Sprite, National Sports Grill, Solar TV, Energen and other sponsors of the event.
