Myanmar Day 0: First Time Flying with Singapore Airlines | Manila to Yangon + Changi Airport LayoverÂ
Two airplane rides, 7 hours total flight time and 7 hours layover – numbers that summarize our travel from Manila to Yangon, Myanmar via Singapore Airlines.Â
It was my first time to fly via Singapore Airlines and it is quite a comfortable flight for a travel less than 5 hours. Singapore Airlines is considered third best airline in the world. Although we got to fly Economy Class (which is okay because it is rather a short flight), I was happy with the thought of having an in-flight entertainment and meals as we fly across Southeast Asia.Â
I always have my preferred airlines whenever I travel (usually PAL for long-haul flights so I can earn more Mabuhay Miles).Â

How I ended up booking a flight in Singapore Airlines was a story that started in January when I won a round-trip ticket to any Southeast Asian destination during a media event by Singapore Airlines. My blogger friend @anagon also won!!! At that time, Ana and I were undecided which country to visit. I would have wanted to visit Singapore again – but I thought I could fly there anytime (and Ana had recently flew in during Cold Play concert) – so we thought maybe we could go somewhere exotic? We were torn between Brunei and Myanmar.Â
A few days before the last day to book our tickets (sometime in March), we decided to book to Myanmar. We thought second week of September is perfect for both our schedules (and my menstrual calendar).Â
We got our eTickets which were buried in our inboxes for months, thinking we got months to prepare and plan – but days went by so fast! Two weeks before the flight, that was when we started doing our itinerary – thank you to Poor Traveler’s blog, network of friends who replied to our Friend Sourcing post in Facebook and some good Google Search results. We didn’t have a very strict schedule or budget; but the real heart-breaker was finding out that Hot Air Balloon Season opens in October.Â

I love flying out on Sundays as there is no traffic and it is easier to book an Uber Ride. It was a breeze to check in via Singapore Airlines. I love that our airline tickets included the Travel Tax which saved us money and time 😀Â
I usually request for an aisle seat, but for the flight en route to Singapore (first stop), I didn’t mind sitting next to the window.Â
I love that I have good leg room and foot rest. I got a little comfortable in my seat and I was torn if I should just sleep or watch a movie. Calculating the flight time and flight service, quick math told me I can only watch 1 film.Â
On the first 30 minutes of the flight, Ana and I explored the many features of the airplane 😀

Decided to watch BaywatchÂ
In-flight Entertainment includes TV Shows, Hollywood and International Films, Songs, and Games for Kids.Â

Singapore Airlines’ service is fairly okay. I just feel that Filipino Flight Attendants are more warm when dealing with passengers. It was funny that when I asked for a cup of coffee (I initially declined the first offer), the Singapore Airlines’ Flight Attendant made a face. :p
Usually, it is when my brain cells are transporting me to lala-land that when the captain would announce arrival. We had a smooth landing in Changi Airport.Â
7 Hours Layover in Changi Airport
During my first long-haul flight, I chose a non-stop flight. But now, I appreciate and look forward to stopovers. It is the time to stretch my legs, freshen up and breathe fresh (air-condition) air.Â
7 hours is not really a long time to wait for the next flight. I planned to blog during the layover but Ana and I just spent most of the time talking about travels and our love languages. Haha.Â

I came prepared for the layover with Vita Soy Coffee Flavor.Â
We didn’t plan to wear matching clothes :p
It is good to have a layover in Singapore Changi Airport – the best airport in the world – with its clean toilets (priority!!!), free drinking water stations, comfortable couches and neat floor plan. Everything seemed perfect except for Singapore Changi Airport no longer offers FREE WIFI connection!!!
There are now free computer stations in the airport with Free Internet. But for connecting with your smartphone, you need to register your mobile to get a password that would allow you to connect to Free Wifi Network for 3 hours. Boo.Â
The solution? We looked for a cafe that offers Free Wifi. Harry’s is the place to be. We didn’t have SG Dollars so I used my credit card (the pros of keeping one!).
For some reason, I didn’t know why we always felt hungry. We transferred to the second floor and ordered from the 24-Hour Food Court.Â
Congee for Ana and Wanton Noodles for me.
We had more hours to spend but we decided to head to our boarding gate. I remember the spot where I usually hangout during my layover in Changi Airport (the one near the smoking area). On that same spot, Ana and I fell asleep. I hugged my bag and clung the strap of my backpack on to my leg – and I slept.
My sleeping cells were disturbed by the sound of people walking and chatting. Airplanes were arriving. I opened my eyes and saw Ana still crouching and sleeping. I told myself I could go for another 5 minutes. When I opened my eyes again, I saw a couple in suit in front of me. I am hopeful they are used to people in denim jacket and funky shoes sleeping in airports. :p
… to be continued.Â
