Working at Canva Philippines + Inside the Cool Office of Canva.
An office with its own kitchen (and resident chefs) and beer on the fridge you can grab after office hours? I was pleasantly surprised.
Surprised to know that Canva has an office in the Philippines. And surprised to know the fun culture Canva has built to stay true to its brand. I got the opportunity to tour the Canva Philippines office Coherco Corporate Center, in Makati – and here I am sharing with you some photos and stories.
Canva’s Country Manager Yani Hornilla-Donato. Prior to being Country Manager, Yani was Canva’s Head of People in the Philippines.
She first joined Canva in 2015 and helped grow the local team from 35 to more than 200 people.
Canva is a simplified graphic-design tool website, founded in 2012 by Mel Perkins, Cliff Obrecht, and Cameron Adams in Sydney Australia . It uses a drag-and-drop format and provides access to photographs, vector images, graphics, and fonts. It is a perfect site to create posters, graphics, and thumbnails (especially if you don’t know much about design).
From a co-working space that Canva rented, its new home is a 3-floor building complete with a kitchen where residents chefs cook for its employees everyday (how cool!).
The Canva office has a touch of both Filipino and Sydney heritage. There are no cubicles and walls, but there are huddle rooms where Canvanauts (Canva employees) use for meetings, brainstormings and me-time (if they want to work alone and be creative). The walls are painted with graphics and there is so much open space.
Canva wants to make sure that the office brings a fun, relaxed, and collaborative atmosphere for operations like design, marketing and “customer happines” (Canva’s version of “customer service”).
Canva employees can come as they are – shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops. The schedule is very flexible too for people who would come from the other side of the Metro. Canva wants to take away the stresses of these things so employees can focus on their jobs.
I love that Canva instills personal responsibility among its team members. I don’t want to say they are pampered – rather, they are rewarded for the good things that they bring to the business.
One of the coolest things about Canva is that they have resident chefs who cook for the team everyday. The big bosses want to make sure that they provide good and nutritious food to their employees. We got to sample some of the good food that they serve their employees.
After office hours, employees can grab a beer and enjoy it in the office premises. No big deal.
During the event when I got to interact with the Canvanauts, I know they are happy and proud of their culture and the work that they do.
