It is interesting to know that after our favorite prince and princess lived happily ever after, the creative people in Disney decided to show us how their kids would live in the modern day. Disney’s Descendants is the story of our favorite fairy tale characters’ kids (and the villains too!).Â
Ben, who is the son of Belle and Beast (from Beauty and the Beast) is poised to take the throne and his first proclamation is to offer a chance at redemption to Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay – the offspring of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella de Vil and Jafar. They are given the chance to attend the school in Auradon and there they met the teenage kids of Fairy Godmother, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Mulan.Â
Do you smell teen-war? Almost. I don’t want to play the evil blogger with spoilers. But if there’s anything I want to say about the movie – it is a fanfare of interesting fashion pieces and styles that even an adult (like me) would love to wear (even for a day). I want to scream – Punks Not Dead!
Descendants is not just your typical Disney movie. It is (almost) real that got me thinking Auradon is just there in London. There’s a touch of High School Musical that got me stomping my feet to the beat of Maleficent and Mal’s mother-daughter duet. But watch out for Ben’s solo performance which would make every girl (princess or not) swoon! Interestingly, I am predicting Mal’s Descendant Song – If Only would replace Let It Go as the new national anthem of Disney babies.Â
More than the flashy outfit, interesting song and twisted plot, Disney incorporates empowering themes about self confidence, finding the beauty within, freedom of choice, personal responsibility, teamwork, justice and empathy in Descendants.Â
Personally speaking, my wildest fantasy is to do something really wild and evil. But when I am faced in a situation when I can freely do so, it is what truly in my hearts that I follow (well, of course I wouldn’t tell you if I did the evil act!). Haha. It is good to be ruthless.Â
The movie stars Dove Cameron as Mal, Boboo Stewart as Jay, Sofia Carson as Evie, and Cameron Boyce as Carlos.Â
Catch Disney’s Descendants on September 13 (11am) at Disney Channel.
