Any conversation about going on a holiday in Greece usually conjures images of sunny paradise islands, glistening blue seas and hillside villas bathed in blue and white colors, or coliseums and tall structures with imposing columns. However, there’s so much more to Greece than its tropical image, beginning with Athens.

Athens is the capital and the largest city of Greece. It is located in the heart of ancient Greece where fifth century B.C. structures blend harmoniously with contemporary city life. But did you know that you can also enjoy Athens in different seasons including winter?
Picture Athens, Greece as your new winter wonderland destination! Visiting Athens at this time of the year will probably be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make as it would enable you to get acquainted with the city as a “local.” During the onset of winter, there are significantly less tourists so you get to enjoy the city more and experience Athens from an Athenian’s perspective.

Here are some activities you can enjoy in Athens during winter.
Bask in the glory of the Acropolis this festive season. Not only do you get to marvel at the
stunning grandeur of the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but you may also be able
to catch it covered in snow (although it does not usually snow a lot in Athens). Winter is also the
perfect time to capture moments and take photos as there would be thinner crowd during this
season while you enjoy the merry holidays.
Enjoy the view of the Ruins at Sounio. One of the most popular trips to take from Athens is going to the amazing ruins of the Temple of Poseidon. A bonus is that it’s only a short bus ride away from Athens! Apart from the ruins, you can also savor the beautiful view of the temple overlooking the sea below the cliff while drinking a hot beverage during this colder season.
Spend a day of skiing in Athens. Take advantage of the mountains surrounding Athens and experience its majestic ski slopes while enjoying the scenic view of snow-covered highlands.
Sample the delectable selections of holiday cookies. Walk into Athenian bakeries and look for Melomakarona—Greek honey cookies available during the holiday season. Once you bite, you’ll simply crave for more.
Relax, dine, and enjoy coffee at Plaka. Enjoy authentic Greek cuisine and sip coffee while people-watching at Plaka – a village that’s also one of the oldest sections of Athens where you can find restaurants, cafes, tourist shops, and jewelry stores. Plaka is almost always crowded with tourists all year; but during winter, there is a great opportunity to enjoy the area without squeezing your way through throngs of people.
These are just a few things to do in Greece during Winter, any other suggestions you want me to include in the list?
